My grief is a door.
My grief is a door.
These days, it mostly stays closed. But there are some times in life, when this door gets violently prized open, and the grief hits us like a hurricane in the middle of the night.
Some days the door will unexpectedly explode , and we will be hit with our grief all over again.
I’ve learnt that the harder we try to lock the door, to barricade it, to shield it off from ourselves – the harder it hurts when it inevitably finds us all the same.
I’m learning that the truth is, we can never really lock away our grief.
We cannot run from it, hide from it. It will always be there, it is as much a part of us as our endless love is.So these days, I don’t try to lock away my grief anymore.
No.
These days, I like to keep the door a little open, propped up by my kindness.
So when I see grief coming, or it hits me unexpectedly, instead of running, I say hello.Hello there, welcome grief. I see you’ve come for a while – I am not grief, it does not own me, though I sit with it. – https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/3cetir/comment/csuvr2o/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
And perhaps that’s all we can do, really. Allow our grief to wash over us, to sit with it, to be with it, but not identify with it.
Grief is as much as a part of us as love is.
My grief is a door, I choose to keep it open and let love flow out. -
Maybe I should rest.
Maybe I should rest,
If only I knew how,
I need to keep working,
I have to get it out.Maybe I should rest,
But I never found out why,
Until my heart was broken,
And all my tears ran dry.
Maybe I should rest,
Before my life slips away,
Worried I’d never make it,
Unto another day.
Maybe I should rest,
My weary, wretched, soul,
How much more can I take,
Before the dark consumes my all.So maybe I should rest,
Before I end up just like you,
A burnt out, broken, brute,
That no one really knew.Maybe I should rest,
But I’m not sure that I can,
Never learnt how to,
So I’ll give it all I am.Maybe I should rest,
Before it catches up to me,
Maybe I’ll just try,
And see where it leads.
So this is me trying,
I’m giving it my best,
I hope when I awake from slumber,
I’ve finally had some rest. -
Perfection is the enemy of progress
If you want to lead a meaningful life, if you want to achieve your wildest dreams, you first have to start. You have to begin your journey somewhere, with the first step.
Perfection is the enemy of progress – they say.
And it’s true. There are so many talented, creative, unique individuals out there that have so much to share with the world, but are unable to do so.
Maybe they feel they have to be good enough or clever enough to be able to start, so they end up never starting.Maybe they feel like they’re creating into a vacuum, or that there are so many other people out there doing what they want to do that they think there isn’t any point.
And maybe there is some truth in that, that what we create may not ever reach a million people. We may not ever publish a famous book, or be able to make a living selling our art.
It can be hard to be a creative in this world, wanting to share your deepest self with others, only to be hindered along every step of the way. Maybe you don’t have enough time, or money, or energy to do what you love every day.
But for me, art isn’t necessarily about being able to survive off of it one day. It’s about the process, it’s about sharing it.
To create art is to be vulnerable, to share a piece of yourself with the whole wide world. It is to be fearless and show up as your most authentic self, regardless of how the world views it.
And to do that, you have to start. You have to take the first step. If you’re able to do that a few times, eventually you’ll get better.
It will get easier. You’ll improve each time you create. And eventually, you’ll be proud of what you’ve created, of what you’ve shared.
That piece of yourself that you’ve so bravely shared with the world. And maybe, just maybe, one day, when you’re unsure if you’ve made any difference at all, unsure if there is any purpose to your art, maybe a stranger will message you, telling you that you’ve inspired them, that you’ve helped them, that you’ve saved them.
And maybe then, you’ll feel the purpose of your art.
Perfection is the enemy progress they say, don’t let it conquer you – start today.

Whenever I’m With You
Does the sky ever shine,
A different shade of blue?
I could swear it shines brighter,
Whenever I’m with you.Does the ocean ever gleam,
A different kind of hue?
It feels so much richer,
Whenever I’m with you.Do your eyes set alight,
When I stare into your soul,The beauty of their twinkle,
Your love that makes me whole.Do you know the power,
You hold within your hands,
You set my heart free,
The only one who understands.Whenever I’m with you,
I feel bulletproof,
I want to dance and scream,
Atop of every roof.Whenever I’m with you,
I know I’ll be okay,
All my worries disappear,
Just like that summer’s day.Whenever I’m with you,
The voices seem so small,
Their words have no effect,
No hold on me at all.Whenever I’m with you,
I see the good in everyone,
No longer look for dark,
Only seek light from the sun.Whenever I’m with you.

The hole inside
The hole inside,
Where darkness grows,
Cold,
Alone,
No hope to show. The hole inside,
Is it dead?
Am I alive?The hole inside,
That grows and grows,
A sinking feeling,
That never slows.Deeper and deeper,
Below I go.
A drink,
A smoke,
When I feel low.I see the void,
Inside my heart,
Will I close it,
Or tear it apart.Bigger and bigger,
The void it grows.
Can I be saved?
No one knows. -
The Secret Door
There is a secret door inside my brain,
Where lovers laugh,
And rivals reign.
There is a secret door inside my brain,
Where time stands still,
In absence of pain.
There is a secret door inside my brain,
I keep passing through it,
Again and again.
A secret door,
Into my mind,
A glimpse,
A glimmer,
Of a sacred time.
The secret door,
That no one sees,
I hope one day,
That you’ll find me,
Standing there with all your dreams,
Your hopes,
Your joys,
Your silent screams.
A secret door,
That no one knew,
Will it open,
Just for you? -
This is your story.
This is your story. It’s your life, a life that should be built around your desires, your values, not anyone else’s.
This is your story. Nobody else has walked a thousand miles in your shoes, nobody else knows what it’s like to be you, has endured the same happiness and pain as you have.
This is your story. Nobody can take it away from you, your goals, your dreams. You get to choose who you want to be, if only you’re brave enough to grasp it, brave enough to hold on tightly and not let go while you weather all the storms that life throws at you.
This is your story. Isn’t it worth it, to try? To try with all your might, with every ounce of strength, to try and live a life that feels fulfilling to you, not one that other people think you should be living, not one that you’re doing out of convenience, isn’t it worth it to try?
This is your story. When you’re lying on your death bed, looking back at your life, wondering about which decisions lead to where, isn’t it worth it to have a life that you can look back on, and say with absolute conviction, that it was good, to have lived the life I did. That you can b at ease, knowing you tried.
Isn’t it worth it?
This is your story. What does it mean to you? Everyone’s story will be different. Some will follow the path others have carved out before them. But some, if they are brave enough, if they can hold on tightly enough, they will forge their own path. They will lead an intentional life, full of their values, and one to be proud of.
This is your story. How do you want it to end?

Somewhere in between
Somewhere in between the cracks,
I see the truth, the whole.
The lies behind your mask, they stack
Under the weight of them all.
Somewhere in between the lines,
I read your lips, I see the signs.
Somewhere in between the truth,
I see your naked face, alone.
Somewhere in between my mind,
I finally call you home. -
I wanted to change the world
“My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?” – David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas
If all you can do today is one task, that’s ok. If all you can do is take a shower, that’s ok. If all you can do is get out of bed, that is OK.
If all you can do today is try then that’s ok, that’s enough.
In this world of social media and unrealistic expectations, it’s so easy to get disheartened, to want to give up. We look at everyone else doing so well with their perfectly crafted Instagram lives, oh so happy and free.
But that’s just it, it’s not real. It’s fake. It’s a perfectly crafted illusion they have put up to the world. It’s all an act, a show.
They have created a life that seems perfect on the outside, a life that seems like they’re achieving a thousand goals per day.The reality is, they aren’t. They put on a mask to make it appear that way, but it isn’t so.
I won’t lie, there are some talented people out there, some genuinely amazing people to be found online. But that kind of success wasn’t built over night. They didn’t wake up one day, without years of failure, and were suddenly “successful”.
It doesn’t work that way either.
They had their days where they couldn’t get out of bed. Where they didn’t eat.
They had those days when all they wanted to do was give up, when they faced rejection after rejection, when they struggled for anyone to see them for who they are.
It takes years to build a business out of your creativity, out of your art. You will struggle.
But the only difference, between the people who succeed and the people who fail?
Perseverance. Determination. The ability to not give up. The ability to recognize when they feel like they can’t take it anymore, and to keep going. Maybe that means to take a break from the world for a while, or maybe it means to go for a run.
Whatever it is, these people have the ability to keep going, despite all of their hardships, all of their failures. Their passion drives them, it is their fuel. Their need to share with the world that art inside of them, to share their story.
I promise you, if you have the strength to keep going, even if all you did today was remember that you are enough, then you’ll achieve your goals. Your life is yours to create, so go out there and make the life you deserve.

About Me
An aspiring writer and game developer. I would like to tell my story through writing – travelling, anecdotal advise, poetry, sci-fi/fantasy writing prompts & short stories. I will publish my own sci-fi novel at some point in the hopefully not so distant future. Think time travel meets fantasy, with inspiration from Orson Scott Card and Terry Pratchett.
